Assistant Minister Chong Quan Addresses the Cross- Straits Economic and Trade Forum
2007-04-10 08:23  MOFCOM

On April 8, the 11th Cross-Straits Machinery & Electronics Exhibition (CXMEE) was held in Xiamen. Assistant Minister Chong Quan attended and addressed the Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Forum held in the exhibition. He stressed that the history of economic and trade development between Mainland China and Taiwan indicated that Mainland and Taiwan should strengthen communication and cooperation in a bid to realize a mutual development of understanding and cooperation.

Mr. Chong Quan said that over the past 20 years, Mainland has adopted and implemented a series of active, flexible and practical measures to boost the Cross-Straits economic and trade communication and cooperation. The Cross-Straits trade volume soared from 46 mn USD in 1978 to 107.8 bn USD in the year 2006, with an average growth rate of 15% over the past 10 years. Today, Mainland has become Taiwan’s largest trading partner, both in export volume and trade surplus. Over 70,000 Taiwan-funded enterprises have been set up in Mainland, with a total investment of 44 bn USD.

Mr. Chong Quan also said that an all-round direct and two-way link of mail, air and shipping services, and trade across the Taiwan Strait should be implemented as early as possible. Mainland China would continue to take active and effective measures to ensure the realization of the “three Cross-Straits links” initiative.

Mr. Chong Quan stressed that the two sides should continue to boost Cross-Straits cooperation in value-added industries, such as electronic information, photoelectric and biochemistry industry.

Mr. Chong Quan also stressed that aiming at further developing Taiwan’s small-volume trade and better meeting the demands of coastal residents from both sides, related departments of MOCOM and China Customs have further loosened restrictions for small-volume trade with Taiwan.
